In mid-December, Elyria Catholic had 22 Model UN delegates participate in the two-day CCWA conference held on the campus of Lorain County Community College.
Junior Noah Hanlon added to his growing list of Model UN awards by earning an Honorable Mention for representing the Russian Federation in the United Nations Security Council. Only 12 delegates were selected to debate in this coveted and challenging committee, which is reserved for more advanced participants. Noah’s extensive knowledge of his country, strong debating skills, and deep understanding of the complexities facing the Security Council all contributed to his success.
Seniors Carmello Cruz and Andie Rowe partnered to represent Pakistan in the Commission on the Status of Women committee. Their strong debate and public speaking skills, combined with their ability to remain true to their country’s position on issues of women and inequality, earned each of them an Honorable Mention for their efforts.
Overall, the Elyria Catholic Model UN team delivered a strong performance at their second conference in as many months. The students’ growth in research, public speaking, leadership skills, and self-confidence was on full display. Grant Szczepanski, Alina Lewis, and Lila Drumm demonstrated their willingness to contribute by speaking frequently and thoughtfully throughout the conference.
One final fun tidbit: all three Rowe siblings—Andie, Owen, and Evan—participated together at this conference and will also compete in the February conference. The team’s final conference of the school year will take place in New York City in March 2026. Congratulations to all of our students on their continued success and growth as they prepare for and participate in the 2025–2026 Model UN conference season.
